The Whole Erk Catalogue Tales of a Geek Abroad

I understand this is a solemn religious symbol, but doesn't this look a little weird to anyone else? I mean, the statues are not supposed to relate to each other, but to me it looks like Mary is holding the baby away from the crucifix. "Don't look at that crucified fellow, little Jesus. It's just not pleasant. Come now, let's forget all about crucifixions, nothing like that is ever going to happen to you."

Isn't it a bit odd to make your baby wear a crown and then shelter him from the nastier bits of life? I mean, politics before he's old enough to walk?!
